Matthew grew up in Evanston, Illinois, attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, graduating in 1997 with a Bachelor’s in Teaching of Social Studies. He taught high school for 7 years with Chicago Public Schools in the Little Village neighborhood, while simultaneously obtaining a law degree from DePaul University, cum laude, in 2003.
Katz, who is fluent in Spanish, then opened his own law firm, Katz Law Offices P.C., in the community in which he taught, where he and his team of sixty staff across six offices in Chicagoland and Mexico City successfully handled thousands of cases in family law like divorce cases, child custody & support or property division, criminal law, and immigration from 2004-2016.
Katz then went on to attain an MBA from University of Chicago Booth School of Business, a Master’s of Social Work, and a Master’s of Divinity, and is now writing two PhD dissertations, all while becoming a psychotherapist, for which he maintains an ongoing part-time practice in addition to the law practice opened with his partners in 2024.
As an attorney, Matthew is highly experienced in the handling of complex divorce cases ranging from parentage, to custody, orders of protection, and more. He brings the full diversity of experience in many scholarly fields, as well as the sensitivity of a mental health clinician, to the advantage of every client he represents.
